Traffic movement on this line:

Rule 105 (a) Territory - Not to exceed 10 mph on entire trackage.

Points of interest along this line:

Mile 1.3 (Port Robinson) : SNS Port Robinson, Port Robinson : Port Robinson is somewhat confusing when it comes to the CN Thorold Spur. It starts at mile 1.3, which happens to be at the east end of the wye at Port Robinson. It starts at the Interlocking signal at 233N on the CN Stamford Subdivision. Trains pass along this track all day, as it is shared as the main line of the CN Stamford Subdivision.

Mile 2.0 (Allanburg) : Barron Road, Allanburg : The Allanburg milepost is located beside Barron Road in Allanburg. You can occasionally find a CN local on this line bound for the yard beside the former Dana plant at mile 3.2 .

Mile 4.0 (Thorold Jct.) : Bridge 10, Thorold South : The Allanburg Bridge is now the end of the line for the CN Thorold Spur. It isn't known as "Allanburg Bridge', but the line used to cross at the bridge that once spanned across the Welland Canal. The bridge was known as Bridge 10 on the Welland Canal. It was removed in 1998 during the winter. I remember it being removed the winter after bridge 20 in Port Colborne was removed.

Mile 4.4 (Thorold) : Just North of Bridge 10 : This is just a location where there was once small support yard. The yard is now gone. I remember seeing cars parked here when I first discover the tracks in Thorold around 1992.

Mile 7.6 (Merritton) : Merritt Street, St. Catharines : Mile 7.6 is located at CN Merritton, where the CN Thorold Spur connects to the CN Grimsby Subdivision. It used to connect down west of the Merritt St. bridge, but in 2000 it was cut back to make way for the changes in the elevation the the main line under the bridge for all the double stack traffic than never became of.

Operations on this line:

The CN Thorold Subdivision (Spur) hasn't seen much in rail traffic over the last couple of decades. The Thorold Subdivision back then was the line used for west bound traffic towards Hamilton, from Buffalo.
The line used to (will explain in a minute)... connect Port Robinson directly to the CN Grimsby Subdivision at CN Glenridge. Train 549 and 564/569 traveled this rail line at one time.
I believe 549 once traveled to CN Merritton this way until bridge 10 was removed. At one time, prior to the mid 2010s, the CN local went as far as the yard beside the former Dana plant which closed in 2007. The CN local continued to just interchange cars with Abitibi paper located in Thorold South, on the CN Coniagas Spur. The Abitibi engine came out to the yard to interchange with CN, via the CN Coniagas Spur.      Because of the removal of Bridge 10, the CN Thorold Spur now has two parts. The west side of line is the TR Thorold Spur connected directly, as was before, to the TR Canal Spur.
These changes also eliminated the CTC signals around bridge 10. The small 3 or 4 track yard on the TR Thorold Spur was also removed before Trillium took over operations. As you can see belong in a few photos around mile 4.5 or so switches are cut and now it is just a vast area of land along the tracks where the support yard used to be. I remember seeing cars there during the early 1990's.
In September of 1999, Trillium began to operate on the CN Thorold Spur between the Jct. of the TR Canal Spur at Thorold and Merritton at the CN Grimsby Subdivision via the TR Canal Spur which connected at Thorold on the west side of the Welland Canal.
There are no public roads to access this line from Holland Road south of Thorold, until you get up to Dock Road. Dock Road isn't marked but it is there, south of lock 7.
There is usually a daily Trillium train that runs both ways along the TR Thorold Spur to and from Welland via the TR Canal Spur. It all depends on what has to be services. The St. Catharines train heads to St. Catharines in the early to mid morning then returns to the Feeder area in the mid afternoon.
The east side of the Thorold Spur ends at a bumper near the canal north of Hayes Road. There used to be a signal on the approach to the bridge but obviously it is gone these days. There was one located on the west side of the canal at the Jct. of the CN Canal Subdivision/Spur and CN Thorold Subdivision/Spur, but they were all removed prior to Trillium taking possession of the still existent trackage.
I haven't mentioned much at all about Dana that used to be located on this line. Dana, when I began to railfan in 1991, was called Hayes Dana, which explains why there is a Hayes Road to the entrance of the plant. Dana built vehicle frames for trucks I believe. Possibly for the Ford F series pickups, but I am not really sure. Sometime around 2000 for a few years they ceased to ship by rail and after that, they restarted to ship by rail until they shut down and moved either to the U.S. or Mexico.
Some other things I have never mentioned, the CN Thorold Subdivision used to be double tracked in a few locations. Bridge 10 looked like originally had two tracks across the bridge or it was just built for 2 tracks, because I remember seeing a bumper on a track next to the CN Thorold Subdivision on the east side of the bridge. Also, I have seen video footage showing two tracks leading north along the west side of the Welland Canal up towards what railroaders in the area refer to as the rockcut along the Welland Canal (mile 5.9 northward). I remember seeing a map in the mid 1990's circa 1981 or so that showed one track curving left through the rockcut and across Glendale Avenue to connect to the CN Grimsby Subdivision, but there used to be another track that went straight through the bust and over top the CN Grimsby Subdivision and connected in with another track that still happens to exist into a plant on the east side of Glendale Avenue but on the north side of the tracks. That is why there are two grade crossings at Glendale Avenue. This second crossing is still used for a metal recycling plant. Below in the photos where the mileage is marked with '?', this was the old line that crossed over the CN Grimsby Subdivision. The bridge supports are still there.
The are no operating industries these days on this line within the CN side serves as a place to store cars for Abitibi Paper on the CN Coniagas Spur which Abitibi interchanges cars with CN. Abitibi shut down in the mid 2010's. CN didn't serve the plant directly, though photos below show a CN locomotive. That time the unit was being borrowed from CN. Dana, originally Hayes Dana, built vehicle frames shut down the plant in mid 2007, was located just north of Hwy 20 in Allanburg.
Since the mid 2010's, the line has been sitting in the weeds, on east portion - CN's side.
Up until 2000ish the Thorold Spur used travel down along the CN Grimsby Subdivision to about half way between the Hartzel Road overpass and the old Townline Spur over pass and connect into the south track of the CN Grimsby Subdivision, but the Thorold Spur was ripped up eastward back to CN Merritton next to track MM60, which is the stub track along the side street. A dual control switch was put in, to control the CTC access, as this used to be ABS\OCS territory on the CN Grimsby Subdivision.

These photos are of the now TR Thorold Spur, on the west side of the Welland Canal, that runs up to Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines.
During the spring of 2013, I became aware that the mile 4.7 mileage sign on the bridge in Thorold, on the Thorold Spur was not infact that, but rather mile 5.07ish, as mile 5.0 was truly to the south of the bridge.
