Traffic movement on this line:

Rule 105 Territory - Not to exceed 15 mph on entire trackage.
No trackage exists between Thorold and Port Colborne.

Points of interest along this line: (Fonthill Spur)

Mile 4.61 : This is technically Thorold. The Thorold sign is located closer to old Bridge 10 about a half mile south. The Fonthill Spur, like the other old NS&T trackage doesn't begin at mile 0.0. I don't understand why it was never remileaged back in the 1960's.

Mile 5.12 - 5.15 : Lynden and Ormond Streets are located here. They are right beside the Beer Store at the top of the escarpment. The track crosses here and heads west.

Mile 5.24 - 5.31 : The Fonthill Spur runs along Lynden Street, crossing a couple side streets.

Mile 5.4 : This is the connecting switch to the Pine Street Spur. The Pine Street Spur heads north off of the Fonthill Spur at Pine Street.

Mile 5.6 : The Fonthill Spur heads south on a bridge over the west entrance to the Thorold tunnel. The Thorold tunnel passes vehicles under the Welland Canal.

Mile 5.9 : This is the end of the Fonthill Spur, which ends just north of Collier Road. There used to be two industries which were serviced here. They were Exelon-Esk and Allied Chemical. Only Allied Chemical is stil around, but it has a new name these days.

Points of interest along this line: (Pine Street Spur)

Mile 0.0 : This the junction switch to the Fonthill Spur. The local job backs down this line.

Mile 0.12 - 0.63 : Gallagher Paper used to be the industry on this line. It was located at Pine and Albert Streets.

Operations on this line:

NS&T Welland Division / CN Fonthill Subdivision / Spur

The Fonthill Spur is only one part of the former NS&T network of trackage in the St. Catharines and Thorold. It was partially part of the NS&T Welland Division. There are some confusing aspects to the line that I don't understand. In front of the beer store by Ormond Street in Thorold, the 2nd canal used to go through but that was all filled in I'm guessing in the 1930's.
I don't know if the yard behind the beer store existed during the NS&T days, but I know the NS&T trackage from roughly where the Pine Street Lead going north was original with the NS&T Welland Division going south to Port Colborne.
During the NS&T days (I will talk about the trackage from Hwy 58 going under at the present mile 5.6 of this line, so you understand everything. Going south from Thorold, the NS&T Welland Division headed southwest from here under what is now Hwy 406. Hwy 406 didn't exist until the mid to late 1980's where it overpasses the old rail line. Anyway, the line continued to Fonthill to Hwy 20, or as they want up to call it, Canboro Road. Then the line ran along Station Street southward, crossing Merritt Road, Quaker Road, Woodlawn Road, Woodlawn Road, Thorold Road, Fitch Street, Colbeck Drive, the Welland River bridge (abandoned in Oct 1981), Riverside Drive, Maple Avenue, Lincoln Street, then part of what is the present TR West Welland Spur, then Broadway Avenue, Westside Road, Federal Road, and then now we are at Dain City where at the time it crossed the CN Cayuga Subdivision (now TR Canal Spur ex CN Canal Subdivision, Forks Road, and now down in Port Colborne it entered Elm Street and ran the street down to the CN Dunnville Subdivision.
During the NS&T Welland Division days there were 'stops' along the way that were numbered. For instance Stop 19, was Thorold Road.
The mileages of the NS&T Welland Division are not the same mileages of the CN Fonthill Subdivision/Spur. One that comes to mind is the station in Welland at Riverside Drive was mile 11.8, but that same spot during the CN Fonthill Subdivision days was 16.1.
The NS&T trolley and CN co shared freight service on this line prior to 1960, had a siding between Woodlawn Road and Thorold Road, on the east side of the track. I have been led to believe and have kind of seen proof that there used to be a siding or bumper track behind the little plaza at Thorold Road and Prince Charles Drive. I don't know if it was a siding or stub track.
The CN Fonthill Subdivision became the CN Fonthill Spur after October 1981 when the Welland River bridge was abandoned and the trackage northward through Welland was torn out, up to the north side of Hwy 20 (Canboro Road). There was another track that went over to in behind what was a community center I believe west of the end of Station St intersection, but on the north side of the intersection. I think it was either a large Legion or community center. I never saw this track obviously after 1994.
The line stayed in place from 1981 to 1994 between Thorold and Fonthill until it was put up for abandonment in 1992. I got to know the CN Fonthill Spur in it's entirety when the tracks were still in. I knew the tracks were going to be torn out in 1994. I never took any photo. Smack my head....
I have since photographed the line after the trackage was removed. Something I overlooked and regretted. This was before I created my website or even thought of it.
One day during a mid morning in May 1992, I saw a CN train head north east up the line at Cataract Road, but I was too fat away to photograph it. I had a 120 film camera.
Sure enough, in 1994, the remnants of the NS&T Welland Division/CN Fonthill Spur were lifted as far northeast as the north side of Collier Road. There (speak of the present day) now used to be a plant called Allied Chemical. It's now closed or doesn't receive any rail service.
I think the old line was rather cool. It went along Beaverdams Road and through the bush.
I think even during the NS&T days, if this Allied Chemical plant, along with a plant that closed next door to it called Exelon Esk was around, CN would have been the one to service here.
Until 1999, CN serviced the Allied Chemical plant just north of Collier Road. which became another name since Trillium took over servicing the plant until service stopped.
I remember there used to be a siding on tghe west side of this line running between Allied Chemical and the Hwy 58 bridge. It was already abandoned and in the weeds back in the mid 1990's.
I mention Exelon Esk. It was just north of Allied Chemical, on the same side of the track. It had it's own track going into the plant. I know it wasn't open much longer after I started looking at this line. I think it was 1995 or 1996 when this plant closed. Might have also been an unassociated fire. for why it closed.
In regards to when the CN Fonthill Subdivision and the Welland River bridge were abandoned in October 1981, CN and on in the works with CP to build a connecting track off of CP's Welland Industrial Lead in 1980 or 1981. I'm not sure which date, for advance preparation of abandonment, but CN had CP buld a connecting track from CP's Welland Industrial Lead to the left over trackage that was serving CE Refractories, that later became Premier Refractories and then what it is as a write this, Vesuvius.
Then a track bumper was put in by CN at the north end giving head room into the plant and the former CN/ TH&B interchange yard, which is beside Vesuvius, bit not used to store anything. The yard used to feed over to a wye that left into TH&B's Coyle yard in behind, located on Riverside Drive. This is not CP's Welland yard on Riverside Drive. TH&B Coyle yard closed and opened what is now CP's Welland yard.

Pine Street Lead

In regards to the Pine Street Lead, this was NS&T trackage also. One thing I have been confused about is if there was no track coming from behind the beer store, did there used to be a track from the north that fed this plant and continued south to what still was in place to the CN/TR Pine Street Spur switch?
Gallagher Paper, which was located on the Pine Street Spur was serviced by CN on Monday's and Thursday's, until 1999.
When Trillium took over the trackage, they service the paper plant but not for long. The paper pant closed.
In 2006, I noticed that the north end of the Pine Street Lead had been torn out at the plant and up the center of Pine Street a few blocks. This was because the new owner of the plant didn't want the rail on the property.

During the mid to late 2019, the Fonthill Spur, the crossings out in front of the beer store were taken out of service. I was informed that the crossing protection had been taken down, but the rail was still in the ground.

These photos are of the old NS&T Trackage beginning in Fonthill, then Welland. Mileages are NS&T-pre mid 1959, Don't confused them with te CN era.
I have these marked as NS&T mileages as CN really never operated mused in this part of track, when they took over the NS&T Welland Division.
For the confusion of mileages, with photos on this page, CN mileage 16.1 is the same location as NS&T mileage 11.02.

These photos are of the old NS&T Trackage from just south of Lincoln Street in Welland, including the present day TR West Welland Spur (CN-TR mileages, not NS&T mileages, southward on the present day, to where it curves west to connect to the CP Welland Industrial Lead in Welland.

Do note that mile 1.55 is at the north end continuing from last section of photos...southward.
CN/TR mile 1.61 was once roughly NS&T Welland Division mile 11.52 and CN/TR mile 1.2 is roughly NS&T Welland Division mile 11.9.

During the spring of 2013, I found out that the present alignment of the trackage in the above section og photos from mile 1.55 to mile 1.45 (north to south) was rebuilt in 1981 with the connection southward onto the original section of the former trackage of the NS&T Welland Sub mile 11.90 sothward.
The original trackage cut through the grass from the north edge of the 'arc' at mile 1.55 to the south 'arc' at mile 1.44 of what is the West Welland Spur.

These photos are of the present day TR Harborline where the former NS&T Welland Division ran on, until 1959.
The NS&T Welland Division trackage includes mile 1.2 to 1.85ish of the TR Harborline.
Do note that this group of photos are from the CN era, which continued to the present day TR era. Mile 0.2 would be roughly NS&T mile 14.3 and mile 1.8 is roughly NS&T mile 15.9.

This last group of photos here are from roughly where Sherwood Forest connects to Elm Street in Port Colborne, down the middle of Elm St. to a switch onto the old CN Dunnville Subdivision on the west side of Elm Street in Port Colborne.
Do note that it was kept in place until 1981 or 1985 (can't remember which year), when the CN Port Colborne Spur was rebuilt off of the CN Canal Subdivision in Dain City, to the north in Dain City.
A connection to Robin Hood had to be kept in to service the industry, until the CN Port Colborne Spur was built. The CN Port Colborne Spur is the name of the TR Harborline, prior to Trillium days, beginning in June 1997.
After The CN Port Colborne Spur (now TR Harbourline from mile 1.9 eastward and southward to Robin Hood was built, the CN Elm Street Spur was ripped up.
Do note, that the Eolm Street Spur is mileaged from the south, northwards off of the old CN Dunnville Subdivision.
