Rule 105 (a) Territory
Mile 0.0 : Hayes Road, Thorold South : Mile 0.0 is located just south of Hayes Road.
You can see the Abitibi Consolidated Paper train leave the CN Coniagas Spur and enter the CN Thorold Spur to interchange with CN at the yard just down the track to the south. It is hard to get pictures in the yard. You can get some pictures with a
a good zoom camera lens from Allanburg Road. Here you can see both the CN local the Abitibi Consolidated Paper train.
Mile 0.5 : Allanburg Road, Thorold South : This is Allanburg Road. This is an ok place to watch the Abitibi Consolidated Paper train. Remember that the train runs backwards on this line when returning to the plant at Niagara Falls Road. There are two crossings in this area. The other one is a side street off of Allanburg Road called Clara St.
Mile 0.7 : Niagara Falls Road, Thorold South : At Niagara Falls Road, which also runs off of Allanburg Road, Abitibi Consolidated paper (formerly Quno and Donohue) is located here. You can take pictures of the Abitibi Consolidated Paper
engine on a regular basis pulling out of the plant here to head down the CN Coniagas Spur to the yard beside the former Dana. (Dana closed during the summer of 2007).
The CN Coniagas Spur runs off of the CN Thorold Spur at about mile 3.6. The Coniagas Spur serves no service to any operating business these days, but ran exclusively to Abitibi Consolidated Paper (once called QUNO) in Thorold South at Niagara Falls Road.
Years ago, back in the early 1990's I remember a line running directly north crossing Hayes Road leading to the former Georgia Pacific plant located on the west side of Allanburg Road, but the track was torn out shortly after by 1993.
CN 564 once interchanged with the Abitibi Consolidated Paper engine north of Hwy 20. Both CN and Abitibi weren't required to meet with each other for interchanges.
Most times they don't see each other. CN 564 would pull cars that were left at CN Port Robinson yard, to the 'interchange' yard next to the former Dana plant which shut down operations during the summer of 2007. As far back as this paper business has been here, interchanging cars has always
been done like this. As seen in the photo's below, you will see a diesel with 'QUNO 2' on it. Quno is the old name for Abitibi Consolidated, and after Quno, it became Donohue, before becoming what it later became... Abitibi. I don't know if the name change was just that or if they got bought out.
Back in the mid to late 1990's this was 569's job after 564 and 569 switch job responsibilities to bring cars to the yard beside Dana.
No trains can be seen here at the yard beside Dana at Hwy 20. The tracks are in the high weeds over on the CN Thorold Spur. But to also mention I was told Trillium Rwy had a crew that did the CN Coniagas Spur switching near the end of Abidibi's operations here in Thorold South.
As just mentioned, it was in the Spring of 2011, I came to understand that Trillium Railway took over the direct plant's switching duties to and from the plant, using the plant locomotive, 2 to 3 times a week.
I don't know how long this has been going on. It was no longer than a year or so. I never learned what days of the week these switching duties happen.
Abitibi Paper shut down production in either February or March of 2017. The line has sat quiet ever since then.
